The holidays are over, and what have we done?

Well, for starters, I spent SEVERAL DAYS driving several children across three states. We left on the first Wednesday of the holidays, and surprised Mum & Dad by turning up on their doorstep, which was fun. Then my husband decided he didn’t need to be in Tassie after Saturday, and I thought “Ooh, good opportunity to share the driving!” so he flew up to Toowoomba. Which mean I drove 3 hours to collect him, then 3 hours back. Which was fine, because I thought, well, instead of leaving Tuesday as I’d planned, we could stay the extra day then just do the trip in one day on Wednesday. HA! No no, instead, he says “Why don’t we go to Byron Bay and visit Marty & Kath? Today.” So we packed up the gear and drove to Byron Bay, and stayed Monday and Tuesday nights with them. Thing is, it’s about as far from Byron Bay to Canberra as it is from Miles to Canberra, so that was an extra day’s travelling tacked on. And THEN he says, “Oh, and I’m taking a new vehicle back to Canberra for the business.” So now do I not only have an extra day’s travel, I ALSO NO LONGER HAVE A CO-DRIVER! *sigh* I still love him though. Anyway, so all that meant instead of getting back to Canberra on Wednesday, we got back Friday late afternoon. Which THEN meant I lost those extra couple of days I’d planned to work. Ah well. I got a fair bit achieved, including some more boxes unpacked today, all the washing done and the kids’ rooms cleaned. Plus some edits and a few other bits and bobs. Not as much as I’d hoped, but enough I don’t feel I wasted the holidays!

  • Edits for many, many stories. Announce and advance a couple of other projects in the works. Apply for a grant. (all FableCroft things) – got a bit of this done. We published Tansy’s first collection of essays, 50 Roman Mistresses and are almost finished with another collection as well, which is great. Got started on edits, and announced the tables of contents for INSERT TITLE HERE and PHANTAZEIN.
  • Interviews for a blog project. Done!
  • Write about eight zillion reviews (books and TV). – Erm, well, we did publish one Doctor Who review and two Eddings Reread reviews. Though I had many many more to do…
  • WA School Library Journal layout. – let’s not speak of this.
  • Application for Google Teacher Academy in Sydney. – half done, but not advanced since going away.
  • Sort and dispose of several boxes of toys. – Nup.
  • Catch up with friends. I can claim a little of this, but they are QLD friends, rather than Canberra ones! Really missed seeing some of our new local friends. Will have to devote some weekend time to that! Did get a cuppa with Donna yesterday, which was nice!
  • Paperwork/tax stuff. – ahem. No.
  • Keep up with emails – Not too bad!

It could have been worse. It could have been better. If we hadn’t gone away, I would have got loads more done, but you know what? We had fun. And the kids would have been bored staying here! Hopefully next hols they’ll have some friends they can spend some time with here, but I think we made the right choice.

How are those holidays going?

Well, doing okay. Where are we at on the list?

1. Finish marking batch 2 – already underway and cruising. Much simpler marking than the last batch, thank goodness, and half the amount!

DONE!

2. Write a bunch of book reviews. I can see six books from here that are read but not yet reviewed, and have two more on the shelf with deadlines.

3. Schedule a bunch of reviews for ASif! and WASLA Reviews. Also follow up some outstanding reviews for WASLA.

4. Start work on issue 3 of ic3 (deadline for copy is the 15th, so can begin layout/editing what I’ve got).

5. File the darn filing! Tax is with accountant, so these four baskets of filing can be FILED NOW. Good podcast listening op! They got put in the shed. Carrying onto next list!

7. Washing, ironing, folding – it’s ongoing, but hasn’t been properly finished (ie: no ironing done) for many weeks! About to iron but have kept this up nicely.

8. Tidy house for inspection on Friday (and praise the cleaner coming Thursday afternoon). YES!

9. Pack for trips. About to – have been gathering bits and pieces for the past couple of days.

10. Move kids’ bedrooms around? Still trying to figure out how that’s going to work.

11. Slush reading for One Small Step.

12. Reading for other FableCroft projects not yet announced :)

Hmm. So not as good as I’d hoped, but many of those jobs will wait, others might get done over the next week. I’m happy with what I achieved, anyway, and got a LOT of jobs done for husband as well, which needed to be done. It’s a start!

Holiday goals

Well, it’s actually just “next four days” goals, as the rest of the school holidays are accounted for elsewhere. But we’ve got a lot to do. And after the holidays, I’ll do set of “before baby” goals! First things first:

1. Finish marking batch 2 – already underway and cruising. Much simpler marking than the last batch, thank goodness, and half the amount!

6. Social events for children. Managed one today, what else can we fit in?

7. Washing, ironing, folding – it’s ongoing, but hasn’t been properly finished (ie: no ironing done) for many weeks!

8. Tidy house for inspection on Friday (and praise the cleaner coming Thursday afternoon).

9. Pack for trips.

10. Move kids’ bedrooms around? Still trying to figure out how that’s going to work.

11. Slush reading for One Small Step.

12. Reading for other FableCroft projects not yet announced 🙂

Right, procrastination over. Keep moving!

Four days left

Why do holidays go so darn QUICKLY? We’ve just four days left of our three week break and time simply has vanished, I’m certain. The list does not look so healthy:

  • Sort the garage – need to be able to get the car inside, and hopefully find space for some gym gear for husband. Hmm, some progression, but not nearly enough. Can probably fit the gym gear, but not the car!
  • Sort the kids clothes – pack up too smalls, find next size up hand-me-downs for Master Two, find the baby clothes! Have done Master Two’s drawers. I’ll take that as a start! No further progress since then!
  • Sort my clothes – find the maternity clothes and see what will fit for the next few months. Nope.
  • Clean the house (it’s not too bad, but the bathrooms need a proper clean). It’s no messier than before – and all the folding is done and put away. Just ironing left to get on top of it! And since then, the ironing and folding have piled up once more, but the rest of the house is relatively tidy. Never did get the proper clean done for the bathrooms.
  • Filing and preparation for tax – I won’t have time to do it at the end of July. Erm, no.
  • Mailout Epilogue and do the promo work for that.  Actually, still some more mailout to do, now that my errant boxes have returned home. Will do that tomorrow.
  • Launch the 2012 Aurealis Awards entries (that’s a cheat – I don’t have to do much for that!).
  • Visit friends! I’m confident we achieved this reasonably well – I even had a visit from a friend from work today!
  • Write a gazillion book reviews – YES! 10 reviews written and sent to respective reviewing outlets! Just one book since finished to be reviewed, and a couple of children’s books with deadlines (won’t take long). ACHIEVEMENT!

To be fair, I did pick up a 35 hour contract for a database company that has sucked up a lot of the time I expected to have – the job was interesting though, and I’ve enjoyed doing it. Just wish I could have another week off now to finish all the things!

Hmm, how’s that holiday list going?

Ah, yes, five days in and already feel like there’s NOT ENOUGH TIME!!! Why does time go so quickly when you’re on break?

  • Sort the garage – need to be able to get the car inside, and hopefully find space for some gym gear for husband.
  • Sort the kids clothes – pack up too smalls, find next size up hand-me-downs for Master Two, find the baby clothes! Have done Master Two’s drawers. I’ll take that as a start!
  • Sort my clothes – find the maternity clothes and see what will fit for the next few months.
  • Clean the house (it’s not too bad, but the bathrooms need a proper clean). It’s no messier than before – and all the folding is done and put away. Just ironing left to get on top of it!
  • Filing and preparation for tax – I won’t have time to do it at the end of July.
  • Mailout Epilogue and do the promo work for that.

We had a freight snafu which saw the bulk of the boxes journey to Melbourne rather than Launceston! Pre-orders and author CC copies are sent, but there’s still some payment copies to be done! And you can win a copy of Epilogue at Goodreads!

  • Launch the 2012 Aurealis Awards entries (that’s a cheat – I don’t have to do much for that!).

But I have finalised the judges’ bios for the website, and drafted the media release announcing the opening of the Awards for 2012 – waiting for approval and we’ll be rolling!

  • Visit friends! Went for a drive to Latrobe yesterday with one of Miss Six’s friends (and her mum & brother) – two birds with one stone, as we went somewhere new, with friends! And tomorrow we’re off to Hobart to visit Tansy & the family, via catching up with Em at a kid friendly location. And we had the Flintharts on Sunday. Not a bad start 🙂
  • Write a gazillion book reviews – I’ve already got a pile of 10 books read that need reviewing, and I’ve been devouring books lately (I called it drowning my sorrows in reading!) so want to get on top of it.

Yeah, so not so good. And yesterday I received word that I’ve picked up a 35 hour contract to do a job for a database supplier, which has to be complete by June 15. Bubye holidays!

Off to take Master Nine to soccer training shortly, then must get kids to be early as I’m doing a CBCA judge’s talk online tonight! All prepped at least!
