Oh, hello blog

Husband received a phone call way too early this morning which woke us all up. Result? Overtired and very cranky household (especially mummy) on a public holiday. *sigh* Anyway, got up and started tidying up – have spent the past couple of days focussing on academic marking, and the few days before that on visitors, parties and slushing for One Small Step, so while the house wasn’t horrible, it does need a good talking to.

We had Miss Seven’s birthday and party on the weekend. I went for the easy route of a McDonald’s party (there’s one a five minute walk up the street) which was wonderful – I figured at 35 weeks pregnant, I didn’t need the hassle of organising anything more challenging! 10 little girls and a few parents, a lovely big party room and not one but TWO party hosts made for a fairly pleasant couple of hours (very cranky two year old perhaps the only blot, but his father dealt with him so that was nice!). Lots of photos on my Facebook page, if anyone is interested. We had Tansy, Finchy and the girls on the Saturday night before the party, which was also lovely – not good in that of course Tansy and I get all the creative juices flowing which means more work later on, but that is to be expected! I did manage to work my way through most of our bags/boxes of kids’ clothes in the quest to sort them out – a little scary when I realised exactly how MANY baby things we actually have! But gave Tansy four bags for Jem, sorted another bag for my niece and one for MauMau Flinthart, as well as finding next size up for M2 and about a million things for baby. Getting organised, slowly.

I’m a bit nervous that this baby is going to buck the trend and be the one that comes early. I was very pleased when husband took time off this month so he would be home, because getting him here from WA if things did happen would have been unlikely! I have work right up until the end of the month, and am working on a few FableCroft projects as well, plus the usual socialising and trying to get things organised for baby, so I can’t afford for this one to be early! Which is, naturally, why it would πŸ™‚ Fingers (and legs) crossed for planned arrival!

Pregnancy update

We found out a couple of weeks ago that our private health cover doesn’t include obstetrics. I’m certain it did when we took out the cover, but it doesn’t now. This means that our pregnancy plan had a rather dramatic reshuffle, which was very frustrating. Had my final appointment with the lovely obstetrician yesterday, and bumped in to the general hospital under “shared care” today. The staff at the hospital also seem lovely, which is reassuring (not that I actually doubted it – we’ve had great public hospital care in the past, but it’s a new place, so you know…). I’ve also made an appointment with a new GP (one who was recommended by a doctor friend of ours). Could have chosen to just go with the hospital clinic, but we need a family GP anyway, so it’s a good way to get to know one, particularly as we’ve already had a bad experience here, and have had a hard time actually getting accepted as a patient (half a dozen places we first tried weren’t taking new patients).

Everything is going well though, proceeding apparently as normal, which is nice. I have a glucose blood test in a couple of weeks, then just regularly scheduled appointments between GP & hospital I guess until early November, when it will, it seems, be baby time! Gracious, time goes quickly.

Welcome baby!

Today at 1.45pm, we welcomed into the world Max Oscar. He weighed 4kg & measured 51cm.

He’s doing pretty well, but has scrapes and bruises from forceps which struggled to get him out (big head!), and “wet lungs” which caused some concern for a few hours. He’s had a heap of tests and a chest x-ray but the paediatrician is pretty happy with him now. He’s being fed through a nasal tube for the night though, but has been sleeping wonderfully cuddled up to me for hours.

As for me, I’m sore across the incision, and tied to the bed til morning, but otherwise fine. Looking forward to the big kids getting to meet their new baby brother properly tomorrow!

Penultimate night!

Well, this is it! The last day of being a 2 + 2 family πŸ™‚ Had a lovely surprise visit from one of the ladies from work this evening, just to wish us well, and lots of texts and e-messages as well. After two nights of shocking sleep, last night I zonked and got at least ten good hours (despite about a half dozen toilet breaks!) – must have been the weather keeping me awake, cos last night was much cooler, as is tonight, which is nice. Went up to the hospital this morning for the final blood test of the pregnancy (prepping for tomorrow’s procedure), and while I was there I checked out the maternity ward, which we hadn’t seen. There’s six single rooms, and the lovely admin lady said they do try to give them to caesar patients – there were a few empty this morning (and they don’t do scheduled caesars on Thursdays!) so fingers crossed I manage to get one.

Did a grocery shop to keep the family in food for the next week, and came home to an extra kid (Miss Four’s best mate again). Really didn’t do too much of anything else today and I’m feeling most gloaty that I’m so organised! I ended up mucking about on layout and something for   which I really didn’t need to do yet, but it was fun πŸ™‚ Who knows when I’ll have time again?!

So yeah, that’s it. We’ll head out to drop the kids off for the day at M4’s family at about 9.30, in anticipation of checking it to hospital around 10.30. Then sometime in the afternoon, barring unforeseen circumstances, there will be a new bubba! Already sounds like we have visitors lined up, which will be nice (so long as they don’t mind me being tied to the bed!). Heh, I have FOUR books in my bag (well, one in my handbag for the morning, and three others in my hospital bag – hey, I don’t know what I’ll feel like reading!), and I’m hoping   is bringing another one or two on Saturday if she comes to visit (and find out Aurealis Awards results by live tweeting! V. exciting). Addicted to reading? Me? Hoping to be home by Tuesday, but if I’ve got a single room and I’m sleeping okay when I get to rest, I won’t be rushing out πŸ™‚

I’ll have my iphone, so will no doubt be reading and babypicspamming LJ and Facebook and Twitter fairly regularly, so long as they don’t confiscate it from me (and that the service is good!). Yes, I have the charger packed! So, look for news on social networks tomorrow afternoon/evening. Bye!

It’s the final countdown…

B minus two sleeps to go! And you know what? I actually feel like I’m ready! The house is de-junked and clean, washing and ironing are up to date, the cupboards are stocked up on non-perishables, with a final grocery shop planned for tomorrow. My reviews backlog is cleared (my read-but-not-reviewed pile at least, but even the to-be-read is a lot smaller than I expected!), my edits for Worlds Next Door are exactly where I wanted them, and all but one story is out with the illustrators. Baby and my hospital bags are packed. The WASLA newsletter is all but laid out (waiting on minutes of the AGM, and I’ve got a little piece to write about the event that accompanied the AGM, but everything I’ve already received is in), and Shiny 6 is well on its way too. Kids are getting lots of cuddles and playtime, and husband is being lovely. In all, I’m quite delighted!

We had a good day yesterday – took the car in for a service, then just mooched around for the day. Cleaner came, which I was fully prepared for (having a cleaner, even once a fortnight, is an awesome thing – you get yourself more sorted out so that she can just CLEAN instead of tidy THEN clean…) and we had a short visit from one of hubby’s work mates to drop off his car, so met his wife and kids, newly moved over from QLD. In the afternoon we picked up the car, then Master Seven and I dropped in at my work to say g’day and see how things were travelling – lots of news, quite a few staff changes over the holidays, and LOTS of building stuff happening – I think this is a good time not to be there! Popped into the shops to once again take back a faulty DS game and post some parcels, then home and actually cooked dinner for the first time in a fair while!

Only downside of the past few days is that I’ve gotten very little sleep. Not sure if it’s the heat or something else affecting me, but I simply can’t fall asleep – have been wide awake til 3 or 4 am both nights. Still feeling okay, but eyes are very tired. Would love to have a nap now, but think I’ll try to avoid it and hit the hay early tonight. Fingers crossed it’s cooler…
