GUFF is the Get Up-and-over Fan Fund or the Going Under Fan Fund, depending on which way you’re going.

GUFF assists fans from Europe and Australasia to form closer links, by providing funds for well-known fans from one part of the world to attend a major science fiction convention in the other.

The GUFF winners are selected by popular vote amongst fans, after a nomination process. Winners are required to attend a specified convention in the host country, and become administrators until the next winner from their area takes over.

Alisa Krasnostein ([info]girliejones ) is running this year, and I’ve put my money on her. She blogs about why she’s running for GUFF over here.  She’ll be a brilliant GUFF representative for a lot of reasons:

  • Alisa represents the image I have when I think of fandom. I’ve been around in fandom for about seven years now, and I don’t know what it used to look like, but I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what fandom looks like today. Alisa’s it. She reads extensively, not only Australian productions but internationally (in that mad and crazy thing they call Last Short Story) and she understands what it takes to make it there. Just as importantly, she creates, produces and supports in Australian publishing.
  • She also understands the importance of international relationships with fans, authors, editors, artists and publishers and knows how to form them. Just ask robshearman  how she does it!
  • She makes great cupcakes (and is not afraid to use them!).
  • She has wild, Everest-like ideas, and the drive and ability to bring them to fruition.
  • She throws awesome room parties (even when she doesn’t actually HAVE a room!).
  • She is the sort of person who wants to see others be the best they can be, and works towards that goal.
  • She’s a prolific blogger, and excellent email correspondent.
  • Her list of projects to be accomplished in the next year looks kind of like what most people aim for in a decade!
  • She’s given more time and money to fandom in the past three years than many people do in a lifetime – and it’s visible in the form of ASiF!, Last Short Story, Twelfth Planet Press, and many things OTHER people have done that she’s played a key (but sometimes quiet) role in.
  • She’s a good friend.

I’ve thrown my lot in with girliejones  but you vote for whoever you think is the best candidate – the most important thing is that the race is supported, and may the best fan win!

GUFF ballot now open

There are three nominations for GUFF this year and two of them are on my flist! girliejones and mortonhall (and T) are running for GUFF (which takes the winner to Eastercon in the UK in 2009). The third nomination is a two year old whom I don’t know and therefore can’t endorse 🙂 I think she’ll have other opportunities in the future though.

Head over here to make a donation and vote for your preferred candidate, if you’re so inclined! I did.
